Got Passion for Food? Gruyère Guru

In Green Gecko's first installment of What's Your Passion? we have Addy. She is a foodie and creative writing student who has combined both her passions on the eye catching, mouth watering blog, Gruyère Guru. She started blogging after her encouragement from her journalism instructor at Bath Spa University. Addy heralds from the U.K. When I caught up with her on these inter-webs this is what she had to say:

Q1: Your blog looks delicious. Can I eat it?

If you were going to eat my blog, I would suggest you fry it - there's nothing like a bowl of fried computer pixels - and serve it with either a side salad, or some cooked veg. However, I wouldn't recommend eating it, as I wouldn't like to think it would taste like, or what it would do to your digestive system. I would stick to eating the content!

Q2. Now seriously, you are clearly passionate about food. How old were you when you discovered your  loved food so much?

I was 14 when I first started to really get into food. I had a bit of an eating disorder for a while and was always in the kitchens, looking through the food cupboards, trying to pretend that I wasn't hungry. I'd also help my mum cook dinner, because I wanted it to be ready sooner! We're a very foodie family, as my mum is a Cordon Bleu trained chef and used to work as a caterer in London, so as my passion developed, she was able to teach me how to do everything right; from chopping vegetables to how to do a full Sunday roast (although I've yet to attempt one of those on my own!) as my passion in food grew and blossomed.

Q3. Call you tell us a food story? Like did you meet your husband over cake?

Hmmm... A food story... OK. Get this. In my first year of university I lived on campus, which is only down the road from a little village. I walk a lot and so passed through it most days, and one day I saw a notice that they were having a harvest auction and supper. Being from a rural village this very much interested me, so I banded together a load of friends and we headed down there one late October evening. We got quite a few funny looks – I doubt that many people from my university came to the village for the harvest supper, but we sat down, bought drinks and were well behaved. Then the auction started and we made it clear that we were there to spend money. One of my friends got so obsessed that he was bidding away on marrows – he ended up spending about £10 on them! These marrows in question ended up sitting on my friend’s desk for the rest of the year, and he only got round to throwing them out at the point where they were starting to collapse in on themselves. He was forever known in that village as the Marrow Man. Let me assume that the rest – Ok, most – of the produce we bought at the auction was put to good use!

Q4: Talk about your blog a little. What does it take to  run such a delicious looking blog?

I started Gruyère Guru just over a year ago now. My feature journalism teacher at uni said we should have blog in order to 'get our voice out there'. At the time I was really getting into my cooking stride and had already decided that I wanted to become a food writer. I blog about anything I come across that's foodie related. I'll blog about where I eat out, what I'm cooking at home, if there's any exciting foodie news that's just been released, any recipes I've come up with, if there are any food products that I've discovered that I would recommended to people and about any foodie events I've been it, be it author talks and demos, or food festivals. I also review cookery books and have recently started a new series called 'Producer of the Month' in which I find a small food producer, buy their food products and blog about them. Doing all of this requires a lot of time and money. Not masses of money, but most of my student budget does get spend on food! It also means I 'like' a lot of food producers of Facebook, or follow them on Twitter so I stay in the know about what's happening. I have to be up to date with news and the latest trends. This isn't a chore for me though, because it's what I'm interested in!

Thanks Addy!

Passion for Wierd Tales cover and updates

Here is the Passion for Weird Tales cover. I think it is very striking.

Also check the website. There have been several updates regarding submission guidelines and more changes are in the works as I streamline this process. I haven't made up my mind, but I think I'll be using submittable. This will allow me to manage  submissions on multiple projects, leave the window for submissions longer and let writers know yes or no more quickly.

For the authors whose work I've held for consideration, thanks for your patience.

Submissions for Passion for Weird Tales

I and some volunteers are reading all the submissions.  I know that some submissions were sent back in March and I've held them over until this project started. Everyone is still under consideration. I and readers will be making final selections over the next two weeks.

GreenGeckoPublishing.com

The website has been upgraded to www.greengeckopublishing.com . I will continue to use geckopublishing@gmail.com until Passion for Weird Tales has been completed. After that I'll be using _______@greengeckopublishing.com to handle submissions and responses. I'll announce the new submission email at a later date. In the interim, please continue to send messages to geckopublishing@gmail.com.

At some point this blog will be archive and all activities will take place on the site. I haven't done that yet because there are more changes afoot. Changes for the better, I hope.

Updates

For the sake of transparency, Green Gecko is now run primarily by me. Sometimes I have helpers, but as my partner said, "This is a lot of work and not very profitable."

I was thinking, no shit, Sherlock, but I said, "I'm sorry you feel that way."

And I was. In the interim, Green Gecko has gone from semi- well funded, to funded solely by me. It did cross my mind that maybe I should have spent more of her money while I had it =) but I'm really not that kind of person.

What this means for Green Gecko turns out to be a hill of beans. I was already running things on a shoe string budget. I plan to continue to fund at least two books a year out of my own pocket and whatever I make back, will be reinvested. This means up to four books a year, assuming I have that much free time. I work a full time job and as of yet, have not been paid for a minute of my work. At the heart of Green Gecko is a desire to create a market where new writers can get a start.

One of the benefits of being solo is that I don't have anybody to argue with. I can do things how I see fit. One of the things I'd like to do, is have a guest editor mange one project a year. The where and why of this comes down to Passion. I love spam but yawn at literary fiction. I love puzzling but hate knitting. The Passion for series is about what people love and seems fitting to let a guest editor share his or her passion.

This is not something I plan to do right away. It's just something I've been thinking of. My partner called me nuts.

in the meantime, there is one big change afoot. Moving forward Green Gecko will publish a print edition of each collection first, followed by a digital release a month later. I'd also like to tell you about Eleanor Bennett. She approached me about using her work. She's just sixteen years old and an amazing photographer already. Here's a link to her site. I don't know when I'll be using her work, possibly in the cover image for Passion for Weird Tales.

Call For Submissions

Submissions for Passion for Weird Tales will open on June 2nd and will remain open until ten stories and essays have been chosen.

You may submit before June 2nd but keep in mind your story will be held for review until then. You may submit a fiction or nonfiction weird tale to us. While most weird tales lean toward horror, we are open to all genres and are particularly interested in upbeat weird tales. While there are no set limits to the content, keep in mind that our goal is to create a book, not only for fans of strange fiction, but to draw in new readers. In other words, this probably isn't the place for gore or torture stories. Traditional monsters are welcome, but remember vampires and werewolves in themselves are not weird enough. To give in you a better idea of what we want, consider Tomorrow's Child by Ray Bradbury.

We'll place stories we like under consideration and well let you know right away. If and only if you are notified that your story is under consideration, you must contribute an essay.  In general the essay could include information about your love of strange fiction, writers you admire and or what inspired the story you wrote. The essay will be a factor in our final decision.

DO NOT send us an essay unless we request one. Send submissions to geckopublishing(@)gmail (dot) com. We request that you the combined total of essay and short story be roughly 5000 words but we'll make exceptions for outstanding writing. Pay is 1/4 per word.

Transitions

We are in the process of transitioning most of our pages to geckopublishing.weebly.com. We find the format better suited to running a business. We'll maintain our blog here because of the follow feature. We'll still use the blog to make updates. Please bear with us.

Passion for Horses Live/ Updates

First Passion for Horses is live. It has been live for about a month. I got all the formatting done just before my trip to the United States. Unfortunately that didn't leave me much time to update the blog. It can be purchased here.

Due to Amazon's rules for their Kindle Select Program we are unable to offer this book through alternate channels for about 90 days. This was a strategic decision on our part.At the end of the 90 days we'll offer expanded distribution on multiple formats. We'll also be offering Passion for Horses in paper back very soon. To help insure our success, we ask that if you purchase a copy, that you leave a review. Of the thousands of ways we can advertise, this is one of the most effective ways to increase sales. We need sales to be able to grow and pay our authors better. Higher rates for authors is our number one priority.

The next order of business are submission guidelines. These will be updated this week as well as our official call for submissions for Passion for Weird Tales. Thanks to the suggestion of one of your contributing authors we are also adding Passion for Miracles to our list of upcoming projects.
